MY DEAL: Well hello! My name is Michelle Schaefer. I am a certified Vegan Lifestyle Coach & Educator, trained at Main Street Vegan Academy in Harlem, New York. My passion is Body-Positive Veganism. I help folks create an inner-environment that connects them more deeply with their authentic values---and does so one vegan bite at a time. That's right, it's all about food; delicious food, and plenty of it. Do you like to eat? Ummm...yeah. So do I. I think it's pretty cool that I get to align my actions with my values, eat great food, and be somebody's hero every time I nosh. That's quite a statement, but I'm cool making it because I believe it's true---and I want it to be true for you, too! 

MINI BIO: I was born in London in the 70s, but grew up in Denver, CO. As an only child, I had plenty of time to do the things I loved: explore nature, read, write skits, adore cats, and play piano. I hated High School and dropped out early, but later went back and got my GED.  I then went on to get a BA in English/Writing from the University of Colorado at Denver, where I graduated summa cum laude, and an MA in Psychology from Regis University, where I also graduated with honors. Somewhere between dropping out of HS and getting my master's, I lived in NYC for a year and studied theater at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and the Lee Strasberg Theater. 

THE ROAD TO WELLVILLE:  When I was about 23, I started questioning--out of nowhere, because I didn't know any vegetarians and might not even have known the word 'vegan'---where my food came from. (I briefly questioned my food sources when I was a little girl. I remember looking at a sandwich my mom had prepared for me, and picturing a cow in a field. "Nawwww," I told my 5-year-old self. "My parents would never do that to me.") The grip of denial had started to loosen. Within months, I stopped eating meat. Soon thereafter, chicken went flying out the window. Ba-dum-dum. (Fish always repulsed me.) After reading John Robbin's book, Diet for A New America, I went completely vegan. I didn't know what to eat in those days, and no one else knew what to cook for me. I ate so many vegetables stir-fried in oil that my dry hair started to turn greasy!

After getting a subscription to Vegetarian Times magazine, things got easier. Now, I read VegNews--along with 5 other exclusively-vegan magazines I subscribe to. Life as a vegan is so much easier now than it was 20+ years ago. However, until vegan becomes the cultural default, it can be quite useful to have a guide if you're thinking of including more vegan / plant-based meals in your life. That's where I come in. I'm here to guide, coach, inspire, and encourage you!

WHAT IS BODY-POSITIVE VEGANISM? As we all know by now, the societal pressures to be thin (not just thin: heroin-addict thin) are ridiculous and soul-crushing. Take the casual cattiness of everyday life and multiply it by a thousand, and you will have a sense of the pressure vegans feel to be absolute wraiths. I have discovered that though this is still primarily a pressure put on woman, many men also feel the pulverizing force of this nonsense. It is time to start loving life through compassionate and delicious food choices and, in doing so, LOVE YOUR BODY!
